Travelling to Hull

Location

The 2011 Conference of the International Society for Systems Sciences will be hosted by Hull University Business School, one of the top Business Schools in the UK, and home to one of the oldest teaching departments in Management Systems and the Centre for Systems Studies. The Business School is located in a newly-refurbished interlinked set of red brick buildings at the University of Hull, on Cottingham Road in Hull, UK.

The City of Kingston upon Hull is about 35 miles due east from York, and 200 miles north of London. It is easily reached from several major airports (London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead and Luton), Manchester, Leeds and Humberside. Trains and buses from these airports to Hull are easily accessible.

The City and Region can be explored through the Hull and East Yorkshire website for further information about visiting the Hull area.

Airports

International arrivals in the UK are handled by many UK airports. The more common are London (Heathrow LHR and Gatwick LGW) and Manchester (MAN), Edinburgh (EDI) or Glasgow (GLA). There is also a local airport, Humberside (HUY), that receives flights from Amsterdam with KLM airline.  [See an orientation map].

Heathrow and Gatwick are both located south of London and will take up to one hour to travel from the airport to central London.

There are Express Trains (Heathrow Express to Paddington Railway Station and Gatwick Express to Victoria Railway Station) to London rail terminals.

See below for train services north to Hull.

Manchester Airport is located about 115 miles west of Hull.  A train station is attached to the airport (10 minute walk on covered/enclosed walkway from Terminals 1, 2, 3) with hourly train service to Hull, taking 2 1/2 to 3 hours with 1 or 2 changes depending on the service.

Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports are 200 miles north of Hull, in Scotland, and both have train service south to Hull, changing at York train station.

Humberside Airport has a Humber Flyer bus service hourly from the airport to the train/bus interchange in Hull.

Intercity Trains

The destination Hull train station is newly re-opened, with an integrated bus terminal and a new shopping, entertainment and hotel complex attached.  Hotels chosen for the Accommodation service on this website are all located around the bus/train interchange.

There are several train operators in the UK. Trains to Hull from London leave from King's Cross Railway Station and take about 2 1/2 hours (200 miles).

  • Hull Trains operates 6 times (5 times on weekends) daily to Hull.
  • East Coast also serves Hull on an at least hourly service, usually with a change however at Doncaster station.
  • Hull Trains is considerably cheaper for unrestricted tickets compared to the East Coast trainline.
  • Hull Trains and East Coast tickets are NOT interchangeable and you must be careful which train you take. They will charge you another trainfare if the ticket you have is not valid on that service.

Trains tickets from Manchester Airport are bought at the airport.

There are cheaper tickets available but you have to commit to travelling at a specific time and this is risky if you have any travel delays, e.g. plane is late landing or the underground line from Heathrow to Kings Cross has delays. If you are sure of your travel time however this is a good option, e.g. on your return to London after the conference.

You can buy train tickets at the station (advanced fares not available same day) or through websites like Trainline, Hull Trains or QJump, among others. The Trainline site charges a small booking fee.

  • You must pick up the tickets from the station office or ticket machines at the station before boarding and YOU MUST have the credit card used to book the tickets with you when you do so. They will NOT give you the tickets otherwise.
