Conference Announcement -- Cancun 2005: The 49th Annual Meeting of the International Society for the Systems Sciences

The 49th Annual Meeting of the International Society for the System Sciences
July 1st - 5th 2005
Cancun, Mexico

THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF SYSTEMICS ON SOCIETY

An invitation from Enrique Herrscher, ISSS President (2004-2005)

October 1, 2004

Dear ISSS Colleagues:

I wish to welcome all of you, and invite you to join me at the 49th Annual Meeting of ISSS, to be held in beautiful Cancun, Mexico [1].

My hope for this meeting is that it will not primarily be a "paper presentation meeting". Dialogue, round table discussions, symposia organized by interested parties and joint discussion of related papers organized by SIG chairs will be favored over traditional paper presentations. These however will be duly incorporated in the Proceedings.

Within the ever-existing time restraints we foresee, among others, the following activities:

You see in these different action areas for the Cancun meeting that we seek unity through a variety of approaches and activities. As stated by members of this President's Advisory Committee, we hope to achieve a clarified profile and orientation of ISSS, continue building a solid platform for both the social applied and the natural science threads of ISSS, provide the opportunity to engage with others in dialogue and find ways to better address crucial world problems.

Obviously, these purposes cannot be achieved in one single conference. Therefore, one very important event of the meeting will be to welcome our next President, Debora Hammond, and hear her Incoming speech.

As in past years, the Vickers award for the best student paper will be granted. A further one, a Bela H. Banathy award in Education, may be instituted jointly with ISI, to be granted as from the following year.

If specific funding is obtained through projects under way, a bilingual book "The best of the Cancun meeting" will be planned for publication in English and Spanish, after the conference, chosen from selected papers submitted early.

The ISSS Organizing Committee for the 49th Annual Meeting is chaired by Gary Metcalf (gmetcalf@interconnectionsllc.com [2]) and Lezlie Kinyon (isss06lezlie@yahoo.com [3]), who are in charge of the Call for Papers and Participation [3], the link with the SIG chairs and the incoming material for the meeting. And a Mexican Organizing Committee chaired by VPs for Membership & Meetings Agustn Delgado and Elvira valos is organizing the local logistics of the conference.

For those willing and able, semi-structured visits to Tulum [4], Chichen Itza [5] and other archeological sites around the conference area will be organized, to take place after the meeting.

I hope to see you all at Cancun!

All the best, or, as we say in a large part of the world, Muchos saludos.

Enrique G. Herrscher, ISSS President
